ABOUT ME

Submarine at Sunrise

MY MILITARY SERVICE

Originally from Wisconsin, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy out of high school and volunteered for submarine duty shortly after boot camp.  With 4 years of Navy electronics/communications training and 5 nuclear submarine patrols behind me, I used my G.I. Bill benefits and received a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

MY MOTOROLA CAREER

Upon university graduation, I was offered and accepted a Radio Engineering Design and Development position with Motorola, Inc. in South Florida.  Covering more than 15 years, my work at Motorola evolved from Radio Development Engineer into Software Development Engineer and Manager.  Products I was involved with during this time included 2-Way Portable Radios (Walkie-Talkies), Pagers and Cellular Phones.

MY COMPANY WEBSITES

Motorola began downsizing the corporation and closed their Boynton Beach, Florida facility in 2004.  Hoping to incorporate some of the familiar Motorola technologies into an entrepreneurial startup, the first company, Anantek, eventually led into another called HDTV Labs. Needing a website, it was there that I began my work as a Web Developer and Designer.  I’ve continued the work with OSI International, creating multiple company websites, email campaigns and advertising promotions.

MY WORK

MOTOROLA, ANANTEK AND HDTVLABS

My software work includes over 15 years of programming at Motorola, primarily using the procedural HPBASIC programming language as well as a pair of graphical languages for controlling test equipment.  At Anantek, I contributed in the development of a desktop application using Microsoft Visual BASIC.

I began developing websites when I joined HDTV Labs, using an ASP.NET Ecommerce software package called AspDotNetStorefront.  Once this website was operational, custom email promotions for various electronic products were developed and sent through the MailChimp email marketing service.

OSI INTERNATIONAL AND USALERT

The AspDotNetStorefront software was used again in my next position with OSI International.  An associated company named USAlert also required a website, but for this site I used an MVC Ecommerce software package called nopCommerce.  Since the nopCommerce platform was written for responsive design, the OSI International site eventually migrated to a nopCommerce site as well.

The website projects I have been associated with have all been designed, developed, deployed to the remote hosts and maintained with product updates and software upgrades.  I have been the lone web developer and designer at HDTV Labs, OSI International, and USAlert.

CAMPAIGNS AND PROMOTIONS

Well over 80 custom email campaigns were developed for the OSI and USAlert markets, using both Constant Contact and later Campaign Monitor as the delivery services. With the dramatic increase in the number of available email browsers as well as the need to be responsive, the decision was made to switch to Campaign Monitor due to its significant testing capability of custom email content.

Assisting in various advertising promotions for both USAlert and OSI International called for me to develop marketing material in the form of magazine print ads, post card sized promotions, merchandise logos and large trade show banners to name a few.

WordPress on Mobile Phone

WORDPRESS

With a web background that has been predominately Microsoft, this website portfolio was my first venture into working with and configuring a WordPress website and MySQL database.  A second WordPress website, www.readingroomtutor.com, has been developed also from start to finish and features the Amelia Appointment Booking application, operational through WooCommerce Ecommerce functionality.  Although only needing to occasionally look into the PHP language while using the selected template and plugins, I am further motivated to improve my technical proficiency in developing future WordPress websites built on the PHP scripting language.
